Tyrek Jones, 24, was arrested on Thursday following the stop on Benkard Avenue in Newburg, said Orange County Sheriff's Capt. Paul Arteta.
While speaking with Jones, deputies noticed the smell of marijuana inside the vehicle. Jones admitted to having smoked in the vehicle recently. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of cocaine in the driver’s door. As deputies continued their search, they located two handguns in the trunk of the vehicle. One of the guns was loaded and both had their serial numbers removed, Arteta said.
Jones was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, willful defacement of a weapon, and driving with no headlights.
He was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.
Sheriff DuBois commended the deputies work: “Illegal weapons, especially when used in conjunction with the drug trade, pose a danger to all persons in a community. My office will continue to proactively pursue those who insist on using the threat of violence to further their criminal activity.”
